Earlier this week, I decided to rewatch a couple Star Trek The Next Generation episodes. And I watched one of the best episodes: The Best Of Both Worlds Part 1 & 2. "Mr. Worf...FIRE!" cut to black!
Anyway, in that episode there's Lt Commander Shelby, an expert on the Borg an wanting to become first officer of the Enterprise when Riker moved on.
At any rate, I remembered there was a series of novels called The New Frontier, written by the great Peter David, and in it, as the First officer of the ship, was Lt. Commander Shelby. And I further remembered it had other Star Trek characters in it: the Vulcan Dr. Selar, the young Robin Lefler (played by Ashley Judd on the TV show), and also I remembered there was a character from an androgynous race who was neither female nor male. All in all it was an interesting take.
I had gotten several of the books when I worked at Borders 20 years ago (!!! 20 freaking years...how did THAT happen????). And as I thought about all this, I decided I was going to reread at least the first book. See what I think of it 20 years later.
And here is a pic I found of the main crew:
That's Shelby sitting in the chair on the right.
