Check This Out!
The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials are over, the last one aired last Saturday. And when the 14th Doctor (aka the 10th Doctor Redux) regenerated, he didn't actually regenerate, he bi-generated. Basically split into two Doctors, the 14th, and the all new 15th.
It was hokey, but it was awesome too. And their conversation after the defeat of the Big Bad (Neil Patrick Harris' Celestial Toymaker), was amazing. The best dialogue in the series in more than 10 years. The 15th gave the 14th 'permission' to just slow down, stop running and stop killing himself over what he had done. During the conversation, they embraced, 14th cried a bit and the 15th gave him a little kiss on the forehead.
And so, 14th 'retired'. Went to live with Donna and her family. And Donna Noble got the happy ending she always deserved! FINALLY! A husband, a daughter, even getting along with her mother and she's living with them. AND she remembers the Doctor and all that happened. Without her losing her mind and dying. And 14th is now that crazy 'uncle', and part of the family. And he can rest.
And so, the torch is passed to Ncuti Gatwa and his 15th Doctor. Who we'll see in his first solo episode in the Christmas Special next week.
The story was a bit weak, honestly, but all that happened in it was laying the foundation for what's coming. And 'resetting' the Doctor who what he was before Russell Davies left 14 years ago or so. In other words, back to it's greatness.
But the best part of the show was encompassed in this photo:
When the Doctor's split, they shared the clothes: 14th got the pant and vest and tshirt, 15th got the sneakers, button-up shirt, tie and undies. So Ncuti Gatwa spent the entire special running around in his tighty-whiteys.
And when they made the above promotional picture it was no accident he's in profile, with the shirttails parted, showing his bulge in those undies. But then both Ncuti Gatwa AND the showrunner Russell Davies are gay, so I'm sure they knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
I have high hopes for this series (and not just because of the above paragraph) but because Davies knows HOW to do The Doctor! I can't wait to see more.
