Today In The History Of Polt's Comic Book Collection
Today we travel back to November of 2007 and DC Comics' Uncle Sam And The Freedom Fighters, Volume 2, Issue #1.
The Freedom Fighters premiered in the 70s, a team from Earth-X, where the Nazis won WWII. They, along with help from the JSA and JLA, freed that Earth from Nazi oppression. The team later migrated to Earth-1 and their own series in the late 70s that lasted for about 16 issues.
After that, they were rebooted and retconned all over. But THIS particular team is quite a divergence from all that. Apparently, these Freedom Fighters were assembled by a government agency in order to do assassination the government needed done, but done covertly. They found Uncle Sam and he joined, even though hew as aghast at all the killing.
This is about the time of the Countdown maxi series that moved the entire DC universe ahead 52 weeks. That whole process was frankly confusing, and so is this entire series. I'm pretty sure I have all the issues, but I don't know if I read many of them. IT was dark, both in art and tone, and frankly, I have little interest in reading about a team of "heroes" who blatantly and actively kill others. I don't find those people to be heroic. But that was the times.
