MAPS!
This map shows the world under the Treaty of Tordesillas, which was brokered by the Pope and it was between Portugal and Spain. It said, Portugal would have ALL the newly discovered territories between two latitudes (the land in purple) and Spain could have the other half of the world (in yellow). Obviously, neither side really followed this...or know what they had, at the time they signed. MOST of the new areas were not only unexplored, but unknown.
