All Hallow's Eve...

In case you didn't know, tonight's Halloween.  It's not a big deal around here, cause Trick Or Treat was last Thursdays.  But in order to get with the swing of things, here's some pics of some Halloween costumes!

I'm not sure which I'd want, his trick or his treat!

Why hello officer, is that your nightstick, or are you just glad to see me?

Doogie Howser, Vampire MD!

The Batman family: Batman, Robin, The Joker, Catwoman, the Penguin, and Harley Quinn!

The Super Kids!

I don't really know what the hell is going on here, but despite it being a little freaky, it's kinda turning me on...

Okay, this TOTALLY freaks me out....but yet TOTALLY turns me on too!!!!

Happy Halloween!

So I survived Hurricane Sandy just fine.  Oh there was some wind, there was a lot of rain, but none of it in downbursts that might have flooded the basement.  And the power never went out, even though the lights did flicker ever so slightly about three times.

So what did I learn from Hurricane Sandy?

1) It's good to prepare way ahead of time so that you don't have to stand in line or hunt for a parking space.
2) One can do all kinds of things one never thought one could in times of emergency...like watching 11 straight hours of The Weather Channel.
3) If one wants to put a storm window in the door and remove the screen, it's best NOT to do it in the midst of a hurricane when the winds are blowing so hard it blows the storm window back in on you more than one, smacking you in the side of the head pretty hard one time.
4) When one schedules the guys to come put the new storm doors on, it's best not to do it on the day a hurricane it due to arrive.  (see #3 above).
5) When in your house alone, with a hurricane approaching, and you're just a smidge scared, it can help to stay on Twitter and bore and irritate your friend with nearly constant updates of how you're doing.

Just some advice for anyone who gets caught in an impending hurricane.

It is 5 years ago today that my father died.

It seems like it's been so much longer than that, and yet at the same time, I can't believe it's been a whole 5 years.  You can read about it HERE.

I've been so wrapped up in the coming hurricane I hadnt really thought about it that much at all.  Which is unfortunate.

But here's a photo of dad about a week before the end.  He really couldn't get out of bed at all. And Angel's at her customary place: on the bed with dad.  Even after he was dead, she remained on the bed with him.  And she stayed there even when they came to take the body away, she wouldn't get down.  We had to physically pick her up off the bed.  She's a good dog.

Anyway, this isn't a good or pleasant anniversary, but it's one I couldn't let pass.

Sandy is the seashore, and Sandy is the sea...

So I've been preparing for the imminent arrival of Hurricane Sandy...bitch that she is.  What have I done, you may ask?  Well, please, do ask, cause otherwise there's no need to even make this post.  Well, hey, thanks for asking.  Here's some photos of what I've done!

Got a full tank of gas.

Took the garbage can into the basement so it doesn't blow away.

Put sandbags around the window that leaks.

Put sakrete under the window frame and then sprayed the foam in all the cracks.  It doesn't LOOK good, but I hope it works.

Put bag full of old sheets and towels in the basement in case the water gets in.

Got a little extra cash.

Bought a few canned good just in case I need them.

Two jugs filled with water and a jug of iced tea, which including the Diet Cokes I have in the fridge too, should be enough to get me through, even if the power goes out.

Got a new flashlight, so that now there's one on each level of the house, and extra batteries, in case the power goes out.

A drawer full of candles, in case the power goes out.

A bookcase full of books to read, in case there's no power for TV, Internet or fun on the cellphone.

A stash of book gay porn, to read by candlelight, if there's no power for high-speed Internet porn.outnd

And if I get stuck inside because of flood waters with a cute Asian twinkie with a hairthing I rescued from the water, and we get stuck for days on end....well I'm prepared.

I hope all my friend around here, and New Jersey and the New York area are safe through Sandy's visit.  Best of luck everyone!

Floods are risin' It's our time, the wait is over...

I may, or may not, have mentioned that window in the back of my basement leaks sometimes.  When it rains a large amount in a short period of time, the water gets down into the window well and comes in to the basement.  It's done it three times since I bought the house three years ago.  But my king sized bed is larger that the puddle of water that resulted.  And it was always just a puddle not a deep amount.

So the news the last couple days has all been about this hurricane Sandy that's in the Bahamas right now.  They sent an email out from the Emergency Management guy for the county today.  He said if Sandy continues on it's projected course, the eye would pass just to the NorthEast of the county I work in, and probably right through the county I live in.

This could mean winds between 36-73 mph, extensive power outages, 6-8 inches of rain, with 10 inches possible locally.  And if the water got in the basement with under 10 inches of rain three times, well it just seemed pretty damn likely that it'd get in WITH 10 inches of rain.  And probably a LOT more than before.

So, Thursday, I took off in the afternoon, mom came down and we used some sakrete to seal up the base of the window, which was pretty much just open (which is why the water so easily came in).  We waited for that to dry overnight, and then this afternoon we used a bottle of that foam that fills in cracks (forget the name of the stuff) and filled in the cracks along the side of the window.  Then we went to Lowe's, and I bought three sandbags.  I put them around the window outside, hopefully that'll keep most the water from even getting to the window well.  Mom got some gas for her car, we ate dinner (and I have no idea why the salads at The Parlor House are SO much more tastier than those elsewhere, or even the ones I make at home), and then we to the grocery store.  I picked a few canned items and snacks that dont need refrigerated, and some iced tea.  Also at Lowe's got some battery for the flashlights and a new flashlight as well.  Just in the powers out for a while.

Am I overreacting?   Not with the window, I don't think, but the rest of it, I may be.  Still, I'd prefer to be over-prepared rather than under-prepared.  Since it's supposed to rain from Sunday into Wednesday, and sometimes heavily, I hope I've done enough.  If the water still gets in, I have a bag full of old towels and sheets to throw down if the water does somehow get in.

I guess this time next week, I'll know how well I've done with the planning.
