How was my Memorial Day?  Let me tell ya.

The ParisPekings, all five of them (Mr,. Mrs. and the girls), came to my house as planned....albeit a bit late. Surprising, is it not, that someone who every Monday gets up at 4AM to get to work on time, somehow doesn't get up in time to get here by 830AM, but whatever.....

So we walked to Main Street, to my family's usual standing place to watch the parade.  And there we watched the parade.  It was...well, a Waynesboro Memorial Day Parade...take that to mean what you think it means, cause it probably does.

Anyway, after the 45 minutes of the parade, all of us then walked down to the town park.  There, while the girls played on playground equipment, we three sat or stood in the shade of trees.  They played for perhaps a half hour, and then we proceeded to walk back to my house here.

Now everywhere we went, we were under trees, so I don't know HOW it happened, but I got sunburnt.  I'm red like a lobster, a very nice shade of light red, almost pink.  *SIGH*  My forehead especially, but my face, and the back of my neck.  And yes, I now fit in better for the area where I live because I'm truly a redneck.  *SIGH*

Anyway, next we drove out to mom's cottage.  Since not everyone was there yet, we went out back of mom's cottage to the Greens.  It's a large grassy area with cottages on both sides of it, and a concrete walkway that circles it.  The girls rode their scooters on it while we three adults sat on a bench near mom's cottage and watched them and talked (and this bench too was under a tree).

When my cousins and their two sons (one 11 years old, the other 18 months) arrived, we went out front to the patio where mom had set up the tables and was using the grill.  We had a ton of food: burgers, dogs, baked beans, mac salad, cheeses, chips, deviled eggs, fruit tray, veggie tray, and I can't remember everything else that was there.  But it was ALL delicious.  See, this is my first plate:

Yummy!  Yummy squared!

When they arrived, the 18mth old was asleep.  His mom put him on the bed with pillows on either side to let him sleep.  When some of us would go into the cottage to get some food, we'd check on the lil guy to see how he was doing.

One time I went in, he was sitting up in bed, his hair going ALL over the place, looking around a bit confused and just ready to start fussing.  But I went in and said, "hey buddy, you wanna go see everyone else?" And put my hand out.  He reached up for them, which was kinda surprising, since he wouldn't go to me earlier in the day at the parade.  But I guess since I was rescuing him from strange place where he woke up alone, I was an alright guy.

In fact, even after we went outside with the others, and I sat down, he still stayed cuddled up against me for a bit.  See:

He's such a cutie.  When his mother presented him with watermelon, then he grabbed a plastic fork and ate it all himself.  A LOT of it.

Later on, after the ParisPekings returned home, we went out back at to the Greens as well, and watched as the lil guy just played around and the 11 year old rode his bike all over the Greens.  And we sat there and talked and such.

We cleaned up and left all about the same time.  I returned home, showered, and got online for a bit and watched some TV, basically just relaxing and trying not to think about the stinging in my neck.

Anyway, the day was fun, with lots of great food, great people, parades, kids, and, as I said, fun!

Let me tell you a story.

Traditionally, on Memorial Day, my parents, myself and other various family members would walk to a specific spot on Main street, watch the parade, then come back to mom's house and have a cookout.

As mom's no longer IN her house downtown, but in a cottage 4 miles out of town, I asked her if we were going to be doing anything Memorial Day.  She told me she was getting some dental work done the Friday before and wasn't sure how she would be feeling on Monday.  Plus, he brother and two of her nieces had asked about doing something and she had told them all the same thing: that she wasn't doing anything.  And I said, that's fine.

So the beginning of the month, we were doing exactly nothing.

A few weeks ago, I got to thinking about inviting the ParisPekings (Mr,, Mrs., and the three girls) over to see the parade, if they weren't already doing something.  And then I said something else to mom, asking that if they DID come to the parade, could I bring them out for a cookout, as they feed me many times during the year and we'll then watch a movie.  I said to mom that *I* could cook the burgers and dogs on the grill and we could just have chips, pickles, mac salad, etc, stuff that didn't require any cooking, just in case she didn't feel up to doing that herself.  I'd just need to use her grill and her cottage (since it's much quieter and less traffic there).  She said yeah, that's fine.

So a few week's ago, we were having 4 adults and 3 kids, and the only thing not already made and ready to eat would be the burgers and dogs we'd do there.

A few days later, she called me and said she thought she'd better tell her brother and nieces that she was having a cookout, since she was having one and had told them she wasn't and that they could come..  I told her that would be fine, I had no problem with it.

So then, we were having 8 adults, 4 kids, and 1 toddler (my uncle, his wife, my two cousins and their two sons added to the above totals).

Then she called me a few days later and says, "You can't have a picnic without baked beans, so I'll just make a big pot of my baked beans."  I told her she didn't have to but that was fine.

And then she calls a few days later, and asked what we want for dessert.  I told her we didn't have to have any desserts, but she said, "Well of COURSE we do!  I'll bake a cake."  I told her I preferred pie, but she said you can get more pieces out of a cake, so she'd make that.  And I said okay, that's fine.

We had made plans to go last Thursday to get the stuff we needed.  So I went out there and before we left I saw store bought cookies on the dining room table.  I asked about them, and she said thought the kids might enjoy them more than cake.  So she just went and bought them.  Okay....

Also, before we left, she showed me the fridge in the pantry and all the drinks she had in there: Diet Coke, Regular Coke, Diet Ginger Ale, Diet Lemon Iced Tea, Diet Peach Iced Tea, Lemonade, and bottled water.  She said she'd have to get some regular Iced Tea at the store. I told her, what she had was PLENTY!  But she insisted she had to get some just in case someone wanted it.  Okay...

On the way to the grocery store, she said he brother wife asked about what to bring, should she bring deviled eggs?  Mom told her SHE was already going to make some!  I said something about her not making anything, but she said she already bought the eggs for it.  Okay.

So at the store, getting some of the stuff we needed, she pointed out the strawberries and said, "I'll need to get some of these for the fruit tray.  OH, by the way, I'm making a fruit tray and a veggie tray too."  I again told her none of that was necessary, but she insisted.  I shook my head, chuckled and just said okay.

So now, in addition to the changes in people being there, we went from an easy to prepare minimal menu to basically a buffet from the local all-you-can eat place!  I'm not upset about her being this way, not at all.  I just have to smile and laugh.  She does like to entertain.  And she does enjoy cooking, and eating, and preparing food, and socializing.   And she does them all so well.

Your own reactions, your own raves and reviews....

So I've fallen quite a bit behind on my movie reviews!  In reverse order of viewing them I give the following:

The Angry Birds Movie

I've been playing Angry Birds (and Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Epic and Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Friends) for almost as long as the five years I've had my iPhone. So when the movie came out, well I knew I was going to see it.  I didn't expect much as 1) it was based on a game you play on your phone and 2) it was marketed at kids.  And I'm glad to say I was not disappointed....in the respect that it wasn't much.

I went to see it with Mrs. A Local Celebrity, Mr. David ParisPeking, and the three lil ParisPeking-lettes.  And it was fun to see them.  Perhaps, more fun to see them than to see the movie.

Nah.  I mean, the movie was okay, for what it was.  But as they say, it was what it was.  A few adult jokes that went over kids heads, and the animation was pretty darn good, certainly up to par for a current animated movie.  But really.......it was completely, just...meh.

X-Men: Apocalypse

This....now THIS, my friends, can be summed up in one word: disappointment.  It could have been SO much more.  There were hints of the great stuff that this movie could possibly have been.  But instead, it was just simply mediocre.

WAY too much time spent early on just talking.  And introducing characters.  And having those new characters talk to established characters.  And have the new characters talk to other new characters.  In other words....boring.  Eventually, we get some action, but even all that isn't all that great.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't TOTALLY dismal.  Quicksilver has two great scenes!  There's some pretty nice shirtless eye candy a few times.  The kid doing Nightcrawler does him just like Nightcrawler should be done.  Alex Summers (Havoc) has a sweet hairthing. And......um, yeah, that's about it.

Some spoilers follow.

I do not like that they kill off Havoc.  I do not like Apocalypse, the big villain, is responsible for Storm's hair color and Pyslocke's improved powers (no problem with Angel becoming Arch-Angel, as Apocalypse actually did that in the comics).  I don't like the way Caliban was misused.  I don't like how they traverse the world in unreasonably, unbelievably short amount of times (Mystique and Nightcrawler get from East Berlin to Upstate New York, overnight, seemingly by his teleporting.  A helicopter flies from just north of NYC to the far western Canadian Rockies in little to no time.  They get from the Canadian Rockies to Cairo in little to no time.)  I dont like how Jean Grey is apparently becoming Phoenix just because she's born with the ability to do so. And Wolverine's appearance is totally gratuitous and unnecessary...and pointless as well.

Oh and at the end, Magneto says the exact same quote than Magneto said to Xavier in the very first X-Men movie.  *SIGH*  The biggest problem I had, though, was the lost potential.  It simply COULD have been so MUCH more....but it wasn't.

Captain America: Civil War

I can't BELIEVE it's taken me this long to do a review of this!  After seeing it three times and having plenty of time to think about it, I can easily, honestly, and clearly say: this is THE best comic book movie EVAH!  EVAH!  It's better than either of the Avengers.  It's better than any Batman movie.  It's better than the Watchmen.  It's better than any Marvel individual superhero movie.  It's the best EVAH,

Why, you ask?  Well let me tell you.  Obviously, there will be spoilers below.

Firstly, I do NOT like movies where heroes fight each other.  I think it's short sighted, non-imaginative and non-creative.  I think it's a boring, over-used comic book cliche.  I think there are PLENTY of other bad guys out there they SHOULD be fighting.  So yeah, don't like whole scenario, either in the comics, the movies, or tv shows.

Secondly, in this specific instance, I knew the heroes would be choosing sides.  And it made NOT sense whatsoever to me that bad boy, rebellious Tony Stark would be on the side of the government, and that Boy Scout, soldier Captain America would be working AGAINST the government.  Made no sense at all.

However, in the past, Marvel movies have not let me down.  In the previews they had for Avengers 2, they showed Hulk and Iron Man fighting, but it totally worked when you saw it all in context. So, I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the film as well.

And they did NOT disappoint!  The reason why Tony Stark went with the government totally made sense for the character.  Cap's reasoning was a bit hard headed, but not out of character at all.

Marvel films got the rights to Spider-Man back and they did a better job in a small part othis movie than ALL the other 5 films put together!  They got an actor who looked and acted like a geeky, anxious, teenager.  They didn't bother with his origin, cause everyone already knows it (unlike, say some really idiotic shitstorm of a movie from DC released earlier in the year which began, I'm told, with Bruce Wayne's parents getting shot AGAIN!  I mean, chrimeny, is there ANYONE alive who DOESN'T know that's Batman's origin? Sheesh!), they just went right into it.

They introduced the Black Panther (and DAMN is Chadwick Boseman a sweet piece of eye candy!  Especially with that accent he uses) and set him up as another hero in the Marvel Universe. (I'm totally ready for his own movie to come out!)  And he was one of the character who had the greatest character development.  But there was also some development in the personality of Tony Stark.  Very unexpected, that.

They showed some early, small signs of a relationship between the Vision and the Scarlet Witch.  Ant-Man was GREAT, as was Spider-Man.

And let's not forget the airport scene!  Oh. My. GOD!  Has there EVER, in any comic book movie, been a better, more fantastic, fight scene????  Despite being between the heroes?  Just unbelievably well done.  Every character got a share of the spotlight.

And one of the best parts of the movie: It was funny AND fun.  (again, unlike a dark, gritty, serious,  'realistic' shitstorm of a film released earlier in the year)  It was serious when it had to be (like at the end) but there were funny quips, humorous scenes, and great interchanges between the characters.

There were some minor issues I noticed, but frankly, the movie was SO good, I just didn't care.

This movie is everything a comic book movie SHOULD be.   Fox (with the X-movies and Fantastic Four movies) and Warner Brothers/DC (with ALL their movies) could learn MUCH from watching just this movie alone.

I anxiously await ALL the forthcoming Marvel films.

Monday night, since it had been cold, damp, and rainy all day, when I went to bed, I turned the heat on.  Like I had been doing.

Tuesday night, it was warmer, so I didn't need the heat.

Last night when I went to bed, I was tempted to turn the a/c on!

And tonight, I just MAY turn it on....it was 90 degrees when i got off work!

This is crazy.  I hate summer and more specifically, heat!  It's bad enough that it's gonna be over 90 this weekend.  But it's even worse that just three days ago, the daytime high was like 50.  Three to four days is just NOT enough.  I wouldn't enjoy it if there were three weeks between the 50 and the 90, but just a few DAYS?
