 Perez Appreciation Post

The Maestro George Perez took over the artist duties of the Justice League of America when it's longtime artist, Dick Dillon, died suddenly of a heart attack.  And he kept that duty until he moved on a few years later to become artist and cocreator of the New Teen Titans.  But he still found time over the next couple years to do the covers for the JLA.   This is one such cover JLA #207 from 1982.

This is one of the annual crossovers between Earth-1's JLA and Earth-2's Justice Society Of America.  This time around, it includes a team-up from Earth-2's World War II era team The All-Star Squadon.  And they're all going against the reverse-Earth, Earth-3's supers, the Crime Syndicate of America. 

So this Perez cover shows, on the left, headshots of the JLA team: Aquaman, Firestorm, Hawkman, Superman and Zatanna.  On the left we have headshorts of the JSA team: Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, Huntress, Power Girl and Starman.  And acorss the bottle we have the All-Star team headshots: Firebrand, Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle, Robotman, and Steel. 

And in the center panel, we have the Crime Syndicate rushing out of the cube used to move between Earth-1 and Earth-2 to attack the JLA!

Despite the amazing covers by The Maestro, and a pretty good storyline, the interior art was by the horrid Don Heck.  His art was always blocky and stiff and just...ugly to me.

Superboy of Earth-Prime, the only hero that Earth. When his Earth was destroyed, but he survived, he went mad and attacked a whole horde of people, killing many.  He was only defeated by the combined might of several bands of heroes.

Earth-03's version of Superman: Ultraman.  Earth-03 is the opposite Earth, where everything good is backwards.  Good is Evil, Evil is Good.  Ultraman is leader of the Crime Syndicate, who kill, rape and murder at their leisure and are totally corrupt.

On Earth-10, where the Nazis won World War II and conquered the Earth, Superman's rocket did not land in Kansas, but in Nazi Germany.  And growing up a good and faithful member of the Hitler Youth, Overman, as he is known, helped them with their domination.

Earth-30's Superman was sent from the far future back to the Communist USSR and helped them take over the world for Communism.  He was known as Red Son or The Comrade of Steel. 

Following the Death of Superman, four other 'Supermen' appeared and took over his mantle, until inevitably, the original Superman returned.  One of them though, was a spy, a plant, I believe, for Brainiac.  He was the Cyborg Superman. And he turned on all the others and because a deadly villain 

All of these seem appropriate for what's coming.

Crime Syndicate: Johhny Quick, Owlman, Ultraman, Superwoman, and Power Ring (that Earth's version of Flash, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern...and they're all evil).

JLA: Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Flash

JSA: Dr. Fate, Black Canary, Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Night and Starman.

This is a panel from an issue of the Infinite Crisis miniseries.   It shows Superman of Earth-2, the original Superman, breaking out of the area they were in. (In a previous mini-series, when all the earth's merged into one, effectively "deleting people from all the earths with 'duplicates', this Superman, his wife Lois Lane (of Earth-2) and the Superboy of Earth-Prime, as well as Alexander Luthor (the son of Lex Luthor from Earth-3) were all sent to a 'secure' area where they would continue to exist for ever.  But in the Infinite Crisis, they're help was needed in the current universe, so he punched his way through the barrier and they all came back. 

The artist is Phil Jimenez, whose art is very George Perez-esque, but still amazing on its own.

This is from the cover of a JLA comic, it's the annual JLA/JSA teamup and it's five parter (three JLA issues, two issues of the All-Star Squadron), where in The Maestro George Perez drew all the covers, but sadly did not draw the internal art. 

Anyway, this shows the evil Crime Syndicate of Earth-3 coming through the portal joining Earth-1 and Earth-2 and attacking the Justice League!

We have Power Ring, Johnny Quick, Owlman, Ultraman, and Superwoman attacking Firestorn, Hawkman, Aquaman, Zatanna and Superman.  (and honestly, in this particular battle, I think the JLA could come out the losers!)

Today, by someone named Alcatena, we have the initial time Earth-3 was discovered.   It was when the JLA of Earth-1 teamed up with the JSA of Earth-2, and they discovered Earth-3 (the reverse Earth) and the Crime Syndicate that ran it.

At the top we have The Crime Syndicate: Johnny Quick, Owlman, Ultraman, Superwoman, and Power Ring.

Bottom left we have the JLA: Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, The Flash, and Green Lantern above them.

Bottom right we have the JSA: Dr. Fate, Black Canary, Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Nite and Starman above them.

This week we have the Superman of Various Earths.

Superman of Earth 1.  Kal El of Krypton.  founding member of the JLA.

Superman of Earth-2.  Kal-L of Krypton.  Sometime member of the JSA.  Started his career during WWII.  They can be told apart because, most of the time, this Superman is drawn with a different S on his chest, with white hair at his temples and receding hairline, with a thicker, older body, a shorter cape, and usually cuffs on the end of his sleeves.

Here we have the Earth-2 Superman on the left and the Earth-1 Superman on the right.  See the differences?

This is the Earth-3 "Superman", actually named Ultraman.  This earth is the opposite Earth: good is evil, evil is good.  So this Superman is a bad guy, and a member of the Crime Syndicate Of America.

And this is the Superman of Earth-23: Calvin Ellis.  I know nothing about him, other than he's a man of color.
