Superhero Anydays
TOday we have the sad, pathetic, and horrible Justice League Detriot. See, back in the early 80s, the JLA wasn't selling well. What WAS selling well? The X-Men and the Teen Titans were the hottest books out there. They were both smaller teams, close knit, kinda like families. So the decision at DC was made to take the 16 member JLA, made up of supposedly the most powerful heroes in the DC universe, and cut it down to 8 members...four already established and four brand new members. And with the JLA's satellite HQ destroyed (don't ask), the team moved to a base in......Detroit. No really. Plus three of the four new members would be created just for the series and they would be younger, to appeal more to the kids who were buying up the X-men/Titans like hotcakes.
It was a dismal failure. It didn't work from either a sales or ratings perspective. And that's because frankly, it was stupid. A Justice League with no Superman, Batman (although he later rejoined this group), Wonder Woman or Flash? No thank you. The members from the old league was Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna and...Elongated Man? Okay. The new members were the already established Vixen (the one I didn't have a problem with), and then the three new ones. Steel, grandson of the WWII era Commander Steel, he was okay; Gypsy, she wasn't a hero, just a runaway living on the streets, who kinda just was adopted by the team...she could turn invisible; and...Vibe. He was Latino, which is fine, but he spoke with a horribly cliched accent and he was....breakdancer. They wanted him to be 'cool' for the kids, but by the time he came out, breakdancer was pretty much over. And having a white middle aged guy writing the voice of a teenaged Latino street kid is just not a good thing ever. T
The whole thing was just wrong, and I think, two years, maybe. Which was frankly too long.
Zatanna, Aquaman, Elongated Man, Vixen, Martian Manhunter, Gypsy, Steel, and Vibe.
