I would not sell my collection, for if I did, I would cry (Part 81)....

Today In The History Of Polt's Comic Book Collection

Today we go back 42 years to September 1980 and the Uncanny X-Men #137, an iconic issue by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

In this issues, Marvel Girl (who an issue before as the power mad Phoenix destroyed a sun and the inhabited planet the orbited it) is marked for death by the alien race Shi'ar.  The X-Man battle the Shi'ar Imperial Guard for Marvel Girl's life.  But in the end, Marvel Girl, when only she and her love Cyclops remain and are surrounded by the Imperial Guard, she decides the only thing she can do is kill herself.  And she does.

This was a huge story, with huge repercussions.  It was the death of a superhero, at that time a VERY rare occurrence.  And it was unfortunately negated and diminished less than 10 years later when it was 'revealed' that she didn't actually die.
