Today In The History Of Polt's Comic Book Collection
Today we go back 35 years to July 1984, and Alpha Flight #12!
Alpha Flight is Canada's superhero team. They appeared a few times in the X-Men before given their own title which was written, drawn and created by the amazing artist John Byrne, a Canadian himself.
Alpha Flight was different in that all during the first year, the first 12 issues, the team wasn't together. There were stories with one or two members off on their own missions. But for the 12th, they were all brought back to together to fight a villainous team.
I vividly remember, at 16 years old, walking to the News Agency on Main Street and getting my comic books there, and seeing the cover of this one and going..."Wow!" And as I walked home, I just looked the cover, with all 7 members of Alpha Flight, and trying to figure out which one would be killed.
My pick was Northstar (the guy with the pointy ears on the lower left side). He and his twin sister, Aurora (on the upper right) both had the same set of superpowers (flight, superspeed, and light generation), so they duplicated each other. And Aurora was known to be a split personality, which was very much more interesting than Northstar, who had the personality of basically an arrogant asshole.
So I as soon as I got home, this is the book I read the first. Devoured it, quickly. And when I got to the end of the, double-sized mind you (!), issue, it turned out the one to be killed was the team leader: Vindicator!
I couldn't believe it! I was shocked! I was in disbelief! I had to call my friend Dennis, who also collected Alpha Flight, and we spent some time just discussing our shock and disbelief!
What a time to be a comic book reader!
