Badass Birthday
On this date in 1906, in St. Louis Missouri, Josephine Baker was born.
Josephine Baker was a dancer, singer and actress. But as she was a Black woman, in the Early 20th Century, in America, she couldn't reach her full potential due to that American staple: Racism. So she headed off to Europe, specially Paris. There, in the roaring 20s, her career blew up. He fame was unparalleled. She was the first Black woman to star in a motion picture, a French silent film. She was known as "Black Venus", "Bronze Venus", "Black Pearl" and "Creole Goddess".
She married a French industrialist in 1937, and thereafter became a French citizen and renounced her American citizenship. Together, she and her husband adopted 12 children.
During World War II, she worked with the French Resistance, the British Secret Service and the US Office of Strategic Services as well. After the war she received many medals from the French for it. When touring in the USA, she refused to perform before segregated audiences, and worked for the Civil Rights movement in the US, even tho she wasn't a US citizen anymore.
She passed away in 1975 at the age of 68, having led an amazing badass life.
