Superhero Anydays
One of the first mini-series published by either of the Big Two was Marvel's Contest Of Champions in the early 80s. It pitted a bunch of heroes against a bunch of other heroes in battle for two galactic near-omnipotent entities. This shows the headshots of the heroes involved, including several created just for that series (and seen little afterwards).
