My birthday song, my happy world (Part 92)....

 Badass Birthday

Back in 1828, almost 200 years ago, in Maine, Joshua Chamberlain was born.

Joshua Chamberlain enlisted in the US Army at the outbreak of the Civil War and rose to the rank of Major General.  He was severely wounded in the hip and groin at Petersburg, but survived.  After that war, he ended serving 4 terms as Governor of Maine.  And both before and after the war, he was college professor.

But the reason he's a total badass is because he was commanding the Maine 20th Regiment and at the Round Tops, when he noticed the flank of the entire Union army was exposed, he led his men, our of ammo, in a bayonet charge which sent the rebels back and held the line.  Had the flank not been held, the South would have had easy access to everything behind the Union line, and it's not inconceivable they could have won Gettysburg.  What effect that would have had on the outcome of the Civil War is frightening to contemplate.

So possibly saving the Union from losing Gettysburg and the entire war is certainly something that's totally BADASS!
