Ferro Lad
Ferro Lad was Andrew Nolan, one half of a set of twins born on Earth. Both twins were born with the ability to turn their bodies in iron. But sadly both of them were also born with horribly disfigured faces. So disfigured that even 30th Century medical technology couldn't fix it. So the boys, from when they were young, wore metals mask, hoods and helmets covering their faces.
As a teenager, Andrew tried out for the Legion and was admitted with three other members all at once, the largest group joining at one time, up until that point. That was an ill fated group (including the spy and rogue member Nemesis Kid who was soon thereafter kicked out for trying to overthrow the Legion).
Shortly after joining, the Sun Eater was on it's was through space heading right towards Earth's sun. There were only 5 Legionnaires available on Earth at that time and, despite bringing the galaxy's five worst but most powerful villains together (who later formed the Fatal Five), none of them could stop the Sun Eater's progress.
A bomb had been made which would probably cause the Sun Eater to blow to pieces, but it would likely kill the person who delivered it to the Sun Eater's core as well. Superboy volunteered to be the one to take it, but it was pointed out that since the Sun Eater had consumed red suns already, that would probably affect Superboy, render him powerless and prevent him from making it to the middle.
Ferro Lad grabbed the bomb and took off. He turned himself into iron and headed into the Sun Eater before anyone could stop him. And he did. And when it blew up, it did in fact kill him. The first Legionnaire to be killed in action (who remained dead...Lightning Lad had been brought back).
He was the first of those four members to be killed, but he wouldn't be the last.
