Perez Appreciation Post
Today, by the Maestro George Perez, we have this closeup of cover of a Justice League comic book, #197 if I recall correctly. It was one of annual teamups between the JLA of Earth-1 and the JSA of Earth-2. This was the third of a trilogy of issues dealing with this teamup. And here, we have Perez's version of the ten heroes involved from both Earths. (I know I posted something like this before, but not a closeup like this).

On this date, in 1933 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Gene Wilder was born.
He was a actor, author, comedian, screenwriter and filmmaker. And husband of the taken-too-soon Gilda Radner. He was nominated for 2 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes and he won an Emmy.
But to show WHY he's a badass, let's just look at his roles:
Leopold Bloom in The Producers
Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
The Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in Young Frankenstein
And there's also appearances in TV shows like Will & Grace. And I just today learned he was voice of Letterman on the Electric Comany!
Total badass, even from my childhood PBS tv shows, and I never knew it.
Sadly, he passed in 2016 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease, at the age of 83.

And so, 40 years ago, sometime around now, this happened.
Yep, that's your own Uncle Polt, walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma.
All I remember from that night is, it was SO HOT (we had to move it into the gym instead of in the football stadium due to rain). Also, when I walked up on the stage it seemed to be a helluva lot of people were cheering, from various places around the gym....more than just where my family were sitting. But then, I may have imagined that, who knows?
I don't really remember anything else, no who the feller is shaking my hand, someone from the school board I'd assume. I know he's not the principal. And I think I'm wearing the only tie I owned at the time.
Aw well, 40 years.....my God, where have they gone?

On this date, in 1893, 133 years ago, in Wichita Kansas, Hattie McDaniel was born.
Hattie McDaniel was an actress, comedian and singer-songwriter. She recorded 16 blues albums which she performed on TV and the radio. She appeared in 300 films, though she was only credited in 86 of them. She was the first black woman to sing on the radio.
However what makes her a badass is not only her performance as Mammy in Gone With The Wind, but the fact she received an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress, the first black performer to earn one. And it would be 24 years before another black person did so.
She died in 1952 of breast cancer at the age of 59.
