Badass Birthday
On this date, in 1908 in Mayfair London, Ian Fleming was born.
His father was a member of Parliament and died on the Western Front during World War I. Ian himself worked for British Naval Intelligence during World War II. After the war and several different jobs, he turned to writing and created the character of James Bond, 007.
He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at the age of 44. Over the next 14 years, he wrote 11 James Bond novels and two collections of short stories. His books rank among the best-selling book series of all time. The sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The London newspaper, The Times, in 2008 rated him 14th on the List of The 50 Greatest British Writers Since 1945.
Fleming died of heart disease in 1964 at the age of 56.
Other authors have been authorized by his estate to write many Bond novels after his death. The character he created has been in 27 films, played by six actor over the years.
Interestingly, Fleming also wrote the children's cook Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang!
