My birthday song, my happy world (Part 362)...

 Badass Birthday

Today, in 1638, in some long, fancy-schmancy, hyphenated place in France, King Louis XIV was born.

His full name was Louis-Dieudonne de France.  He became king in 1643 at the age of 5.  He reigned until 1715, 72 years, 110 days.   He is the longest reigning monarch in the history of the world.

That's reason enough to make him a badass.   But also...

He was nickname The Sun King, because, as the universe revolved around the sun (or so it was thought at the time), the world, and especially France, was said to revolve around Louis XIV.  He built the Palace of Versailles, and having been there once myself, I can say it is truly breathtaking.  Just an enormous, opulent, decadent, over the top...well, Palace.  Rivals even Polt's Palace, it does.

As an absolute monarch, he refused any ministers, ruling on his own due to the Divine Right Of Kings.  As a strict Catholic, he enacted the Edict of Nantes in 1685 which took rights away from French Protestants, forcing over 200,000 of them to flee the country.   He expanded the Eastern borders of France through war with the Hapsbourgs and took on a hostile European coalition in the War Of Spanish Succession to get his grandson on the Spanish Throne.

He has six children with his wife, but on only, a son, lived to adulthood.  That son died before Louis XIV, but he had a son who would later become King Louis XV.   He had more than a dozen illegitimate children ro various woman.

In addition to the above mentioned conflicts, he was nearly constantly at war: The War Of Devoltion 1667, The Dutch War (1672-1678), The War Of The Reunions (1683-1684), The Nine Years War (1688-1697), and as noted above The War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).

He died of gangrene 4 days before his 77th birthday.   And he died a total badass, flaws and all.

Yeah, this bothers me too.  And not strangers, but people I've known, worked with for years, been related to all my life, just laughing at how other human beings are hurting, and wishing more on people like them.  Saddens me to no end.

If I were a hero, I'd be Martin Luther (Part 4666)....

 Superhero Anydays

This is a panel from Adventure Comics #340 from back in 1966 and drawn by Curt Swan.   In short, Brainiac 5 created Computo, and large computer monster.  He went rogue and attack the Legion, ending up killing one of Triplicate Girl's three bodies.

Counter clockwise from the right is Chameleon Boy (with Proty on his shoulder), Mon-El, Colossal Boy, Brainiac 5, Matter-Eater Lad, Superboy, Shrinking Violet, Light Lass, a mis-colored Phantom Girl and Ultra Boy.

The next to last person is colored like Triplicate Girl, but it's unlikely she'd just be standing there having had one third of herself just killed very recently, so I really can't be her.  We assume it's Phantom Girl because Ultra Boy is standing very close to her and leaning in to her, and Phantom Girl and Ultra Boy were a couple at this time.

At some point, I made a donation to The Sesame Workshop (well I've made several donations there, but I'm sure this is the most recent time, after the asshole Republicans cut all funding for PBS), and a few weeks later, I received in the mail, this little thermos/mug thingee.

Such a cute lil thing.  A nice lil thank you.

My birthday song, my happy world (Part 361)...

 Badass Birthday

On this date, in 1942, in the Netherlands, Dr. Jan Pol was born.

Dr. Jan Pol is a vet in Michigan, having run his own vet services since 1981.    Over 24 seasons across 14 years, he starred in the Nat Geo show "The Incredible Dr. Pol".   He, his wife and office manager Diane, bumbling son Charles and various other vets, served the animals of his area, from household pets to farm animals to exotic animals.  They've treated cats, dogs, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, cows, horses, goats, chicken, ducks, llamas, alpacas, snakes, fish, iguanas, hedgehogs, and I'm sure other animals I can't recall.

I've binged Dr. Pol seasons on Disney+ (no ads yet, thank GOD!), at least twice all the way through.  And even now, if I'm looking for background noise while I pay bills, or post to the Palace, or just putz around online, it's not unusual to pick and episode at random and just watch it.  It's like TV comfort food for me.

But that's not why he's a badass.  He's a badass for still helping animals and their owners at the age of 84, with no signs of retirement anytime soon!
