A day in the life....

So, Happy Independence Day to all my countrymen who may stop by. Since I took off yesterday, I had to work today. It wasn't all that bad. It wasn't busy, and it was kinda laid back, what with all the higher-ups not there. I didn't get to sleep until about 12:30 am the night before, but I did manage to get up this morning and to work by 8:00.

However, the day has kinda sucked cause of one of my teeth. The last one on the right top, the one that will have to be pulled at some point, started hurting last night. I don't know exactly what happened, but it's throbbing with nearly every beat of my heart. I can push on it with my tongue, I can push on it with my finger, but if I tap it, even very lightly, on the tooth below it, like when I'm eating, pain shoots upwards. Not fun. Makes eating a very careful cautious thing.

I'm hoping the pain will subside as time passes. One good thing about the pain is, if my tooth's hurting then I'll be more willing, anxious even, to get rid of the tooth. Course, I don't really wanna have the pain for two more weeks.

I'm sorry to keep whining about my dental issues here, but GOD, I am SUCH a pussy when it comes to tooth pain. I just cannot stand it. I'm seriously contemplating telling the dentist I want to be knocked out when he does the work. Haven't fully come around to that decision yet, but I'm working my way there.

At any rate, in other news, it wasn't as hot today as it was supposed to be, although it was pretty hot, like 95 degrees and not the hundred plus projected. But the humidity wasn't outrageous, so it was bearable. And I fell asleep twice for short naps on the sofa while watching TV.

I think it's time for bed for me now. Got stuff to do tomorrow that I'll post about tomorrow, perhaps. At any rate, i hope everyone enjoyed thier holiday!

Don't rain on my parade....

My town is having their Fourth Of July celebration today. Yeah, I know its only July 3rd but welcome to South Central Pennsylvania small town thought. I mean we simply CAN'T do any celebrating on a SUNDAY! Heavens! How could people choose between church and a parade!

At ANY rate, they had the parade late this morning, there's the annual "jubliee" going on even now, involved food stands, air balloon rides, patriotic music, games for kids, among other things, all culmanating in the fireworks display tonight.

I'll be watching pay per view UFC at A Local Celebrity, Mr. David ParisPeking's then, thank you very much.

But I DID make it to the parade. And may I say, it was just as unimpressive as it is every year. The thing lasted about 50 minutes, and that includes the three long spans of emptiness in the midst of the parade itself. South Central Pennsylvania Small Town Planning, apparently. I don't know what's sadder, the parade or the fact I go to it every year.

Anyway, to give you all an idea of what a Fourth Of July Parade in small town America is like, I took photos. Until my battery ran out. Considering I hadn't recharged it since before Gay Pride three or four weeks ago, I think that's a good run for the battery. But I digress...

Onto the photos:

Not much of a crowd, cause it's a three day weekend and people went places. Normally, when the holiday falls in the middle of the week, the sidewalks are packed. Anyway, after a police car, with lights flashing and veterans carrying the flags (which I forgot to get photos of) comes a contingent of emergency vehicles.

Next comes Waynesboro's own town band, aptly yet unoriginally named, The Wayne Band!

The town's mayor, in a Jeep.

The grand marshal's. These are the family members of a serviceman from Waynesboro killed in Afghanistan just last month. No humor or mockery here, poor folks, I did feel bad for them.

Back to the mockery: Franklin County's Honey Queen!

And a long break of nothingness.

Some majorettes twirling batons.

And then some littler majorettes.

Ben Franklin! He been dead for, what 200 years? But he's still the best celebrity we could get.

I dont know anything about this guy other than he was young, like still in his teens and walking on stilts which was a pretty damn impressive thing if you ask me!

Aaaaaaand yet another long break of emptiness.

There's a local group of Lindy Hop dancers, and they're in every parade doing the dancing as they go to 1940's dance music.

Some of the dancing couples.

These two kids stood in front of us and were the cutest part of the whole parade. The girl kept going back to her parents, but the boy stood out there and waved to everyone that went by. Of course, he really was just waiting for the candy they tosses out, and his pockets gor pretty full of it. But just watching them made me smile and made the whole parade worthwhile to me.

And they're off to collect the candy!

And yes, we had a big truck and a car advertising the Blazin' Auto Detailing shop in town. Just what the Founding Fathers envisioned when they signed the Declaration!

I forget the name of the him, but this is the mascot for our local paper, the Record Herald, famously known around town as the "Wretched Herald". Small town newspapers, gotta love 'em.

A small contingent of Boys Scouts.

More firetrucks and ambulances.

The Shriners riding in their little cars. The two kids stood there and waved the whole time!

A tractor pulling something for a local home improvement contractor.

Members of a local group of soldiers who had just returned from Iraq last month. They got a standing ovation from everyone, myself included. God bless 'em!

More of the returned soldiers.

And the soldier's families walked along behind them.

This is for the local Rita's store. Wonderful ice creams and geliatis!

Random people on motorcycles.

Oh look! More fire trucks and ambulances!

A group of kids riding on their bikes.

And that's when the battery died. But I made sure to remember what I didn't get photos of, namely, in roughly the same order they passed: antique cars, another long break of nothing, more fire trucks, some cars from a local car dealer, some dogs and volunteers from the local pound, a few more fire trucks and bringing up the rear another contingent of antique cars.

Yeah, you're all jealous, I know. But despite the fun I make of the thing, it IS a tradition to me. I'm 42, and I've NEVER missed a Fourth Of July parade, not even last year when I was IN my cousin's wedding (the wedding was at 2:00, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the parade first). So go on, Waynesboro July 4th Parade, you rock. -ish....more or less.

Muscles twitch for a brand new switch....

What an unusual feeling it is not to have to work tomorrow. Since Feb of 1997, my work schedule has been Tuesday through Saturday each week. Occasionally I can get off a Saturday, but as I'm always the ONLY one in my department there Saturday, I've always had to have a co-worker work for me. Therefore, I always have to have a good reason to take off.

But tomorrow, the town I live is having all their Fourth Of July festivities, the parade, 'jubiliee', fireworks, etc. And Mama Polt and I and a few family members will be doing celebrating also. And I'll have nothing going on the actual Fourth of July. So I decided to switch my days off, take Saturday off, and go in and work on Sunday.

As I sit here, I keep thinking, "I need to get to bed soon, I have to work tomorrow." Only I don't. And I don't have anything 'big' planned. Basically, I'm gonna get to sleep in and do nothing on a Saturday. And I can't even recall the last time I did that.

What a unique feeling. One that I could get used to. Good thing I won't have the opportunity, I could get spoiled by this.

O Canada, our home and native land...

Today is Canada Day up in the Great White North. I got no idea what it is, probably just a day for Canadians to go out and eat poutine and beaver tails and drink maple syrup while riding a moose or something. Those Canadians, so cute.

And speaking of cute Canadians, in honor of this day, I thought I'd list my Top Ten Favorite Canadians!

10. Alex Trebek

I love me some Jeopardy. And while some see Trebek as pompous, I'm simply entralled with how he can correctly pronounce all the Russian/Japanese/Korean/Bangladeshi/etc names. Amazing. And I like him MUCH better sans moustache.

9. Mark Tewksbury

He's an Olympic athelete and he's gay. And in addition, he's hot. Do I really NEED any other reasons to make him a favorite?

8. Lynn Johnston

She's the creator of "For Better For Worse". I know she's not doing any new comic strips, she's only reprinting the old ones, but those strips are still funny and interesting. And she did have one of the first out gay characters in comic strips: Lawrence, her son's friend.

7. John Byrne

He's a comic book artist and writer who helped, with Chris Claremont, make The X-Men into the phenomenon they currently are. He also, on his own, revamped The Fantastic Four. When he was given total control over Superman in the late 80's, he totally threw out 40 years of history and did things his own way...not something I'm generally pleased with. But overall, he is a giant in the comic book industry.

6. Joe Shuster

And speaking of Superman, Joe Shuster, along with Jerry Siegel, created the icon. Shuster was born in Toronto, this making him Canadian, despite spending the majority of his life in Cleveland.
5. Shawn Ashmore

I met him in Toronto once. He passed us as we walked down Jarvis Street. My friend persuaded me to go back and ask if it was him. I stopped him, asked if he was Iceman from the X-Men movie, and he broke out into a big smile. He extended his hand and said, "Yeah, I'm Shawn Ashmore." I shook his hand, we chatted a few minutes, and he let me take a photo of him. (I haven't scanned that photo into new computer yet, so I can't show you, but trust me I got it!) He was extremely pleasant and polite and tolerant of the crazy stalkerish American talking to him. Although he was NOT attired like he is in the photo above, unfortunately.

4. Enrique
I don't have a photo, but he's a guy I met in Toronto last year and spent a wonderful, too-short few hours with. You can read about it HERE.

3. The Kids In The Hall

Even now, 20 years after their show, and having seen every episode at least twice, they still crack me the fuck up. Every time. I still quote them on randon occasions. Canada gives us The Kids In The Hall, America gives up The Redneck Comedy Tour and Dane Cook. *SIGH*

2. Ed

Another friend of mine from Toronto. Our friendship started as a random hookup like 5 years ago or so. And we've kept in touch via email and everytime I've been up there since, we've spent some time together walking around, grabbing a meal, hanging out. He's a great guy, one that I have no doubt I could fall for...but for the 8 hour distance between us.

1. Tam

Like there could BE any other Canadian that's more of a favorite than her! She's made me laugh online, she drove to Toronto to hang out with me, she drove us to Casa Loma to enjoy that, she drove to my work and got a tour, and she's just spent two nights here being totally cool and fun. Plus she brought me a case of genuine Canadian beer. And she likes looking at twinkie boys as much as I do. And I can't wait to hang out with her again later in the mouth!

So three cheers for cool Canadians on this, their national holiday! YAY!!!
