Soon recede, and you will see, once you're on a date with destiny....

So tonight, I had a date!

I picked up my date at 630.  When we got to the theater, I paid the way in.  And I bought us the Duo Combo (two large drinks and one large popcorn).  And of course, I had us in the VIP seating...big comfy padded chairs that recline.  They had never been in those seats and not been to the theater in years.  And at the end, all I got was a kiss on the cheek.

Which really was okay with me, cause my date was...Mama Polt!!!

We had both said earlier in the week how we wanted to see "The Butler" and so I said we should go see it together.  And so we did, tonight.

We were laughing on the way there because neither of us could remember the last time we went to the movies together.  She seems to think I took her to see "Mamma Mia" in a theater but I dont think I did.  And of course, she had to bring up when I was just a kid, like not even in school yet, and she took me to see "Charlotte's Web" and I was all distraught and cried all the way home because "why did that nice spider have to die?"  She brings that up almost every time we talk about movies.  It used to embarrass me, now I think it's just cute how she always brings it up.

But after she kissed me, as she was getting out of the car I told her what an expensive date she was, and she fussed me because she had wanted to pay for the popcorn.  Which is true, but I insisted, saying since *I* asked HER out on the date, it's only right that I should pay.

I however, didn't realize mom can be a...talker in the movies.  Not a lot.  But at point, as their gun shots going off, she says, out loud, "OH!  That's loud!  I knew that was going to happen."  I just shook my head and chuckled to myself.

The movie itself.  Quite good, if slightly predicable in parts.  But there were other parts that did indeed make my eyes wet a bit.  Great cast, although while John Cusack's Richard Nixon was frankly lacking, it was sheer genius to cast the liberal Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan!  I can head Rush and Glenn's heads explode at even the thought!

Anyway, it was all in all a fun, enjoyable, if expensive, date.

Just cross me off your list, just one sip...

Well it's that time of year again.

When I get grilled by the ParisPekings so I can get their daughters from school, if needed.

See, the schools need to have a list of people to contact to pick up the ParisPeking girls if there's an emergency and the schools can't reach either of their parents.  So just like last year (which I totally forgot all about until he reminded me of it tonight), I had to give my Driver's License number, work phone number and private four digit code to him to give to the school.

Apparently there are three people they can list, so I'm listed in addition to Mrs. ParisPeking's mother and father.  Just the three of us!  How special do *I* feel?  I mean, even MR. ParisPeking's parents aren't on that list (and the fact they live two states away down the Interstate has NOTHING to do with it).

Hopefully, I'll be the third person on the list, following the parents and the grandparents.  Cause, frankly, I'm not real good in an emergency situation, and having to drive a puking elementary school girl to her house while not puking myself or panicking probably isn't something I'd be good at.

(Which brings up the issue of what to do with them once we GET to their house, cause that then is gonna involve the whole alarm system there, and we all should know just how awesome I am at dealing with that whole she-bang!)

But hey, it IS an honor, really.  And if it gives them some semblance of comfort...well then, I suppose it's a good thing.

Temperatures rise, look into my eyes, another James Dean night....

It's gotten a bit warmer and somewhat more humid again.  But by and large, it's been a good August weather wise: not really hot or humid.

But regardless of how hot it is outside, its always a bit cooler on my house.  I have an old brick house, and it keeps it cooler inside naturally.  I have a clock/thermometer thing that shows the temps outside and inside as well.  So a few times, after entering the house in the afternoon.

June 29th: 13 degrees cooler.

July 5: 14 degrees cooler.

July 17th: 14 degrees cooler.

July (sometime): 16 degrees cooler.

June 22: 15 degrees cooler.

When it's hot and humid, I still need the a/c on, dont get me wrong.  But I like that the house doesn't get as hot inside as it is outside.

It's a weekend thing, workin' on stress hopped in the Jeep....

So, this weekend was filled with stress, work stress.   I dont often get stress from work, but when I do, man do I EVER get it.  I'm pretty sure that's what contributed to my nasty headache on Friday.

At any rate, I still felt it Saturday, but work went pretty well, especially in the afternoon.  Then, after work I went with my friend Michelle to another friend's party!  It was in this beautiful...well, mansion is the only word I can think of.  Actually, it was out behind the mansion.  There were tons of people there, although I hung out primarily with about four ladies I already knew, and their kids.  But there was so much food, I couldn't even sample all of it.  And in addition to water and soda I primarily drank, there was many different kinds of beer and wine.  And there was live music.  I was there for like five hours and had an amazing time.

Sunday, around lunch, mom and I went to Chambersburg to get a picture framed, and while in the store, I found this batch of pictures that were buy one, get one free.  And I found these two pictures that I thought would look great in my living room.  So I bought them.  Two $40 pictures for $40 total.  Can't beat that.

Then in the afternoon, Kris and I went to see Kick-Ass 2.  Dont think if was a great movie, not sure if it was even a good movie.  But it was a great diversion for stress.  It was filled with fights, blood, violence...which all seemed a bit gratuitous, unlike in the first movie.  But, eh, whatever, it was what I needed.  Still feeling stressed though, I didn't really feel like doing too much afterwards, so I just came home and hung out here.

This morning, Mom came down and I sprayed the weeds growing up in my parking space.  And then, even though neither of us felt like doing anything whatsoever but sit around and complain about how lazy we were, we got the pictures wired up in back, got the nails in the wall and got them hung up.  And now, on my living room wall that was totally empty for the last four years, I now have this:

The one on the left is four old time maps of oceans and seas.  On the right is four old time maps of land masses.  And even though they look uneven, you can't see it, but off to the left is a door frame that sits a little lower then the first picture, and to the right of the second one is a window frame, that sits higher, so it's like steps going up.  Which is what I intended, but it's also amazing that the two of us actually made it turn out that way with very minimal fuss.  Nothing we do together EVER ends with minimal fuss.

Then, this afternoon, I took a friend of mine to an appointment here in town, and picked him up afterwards (he has medical issues and can't drive himself), and when we got back to his house, we had some bedtimesexxyfun, which was another pretty good distraction.  And then I went to moms for a supper of meatloaf, taters and peas.  Yummy.

However, despite some fun and interesting distractions, the weekend was still filled with so much stress.  I just hope it all starts to diminish or go away soon.  At any rate, enjoy my new art in the photos above!

Listen close to what I say, cause Grandma's feeling old today...

Today, 100 years ago, on August 18th, 1913, my father's mother was born.

(This was her in 1983, aged 70, when she got her brand new dentures, hence the big, white smile!)

My grandma did not have an easy life.  She was an only child.  He father built the house they lived in and soon thereafter, he was killed when working in the factory, a boiler he was standing next to blew up.  My grandmother was 5 years old.  She was then left to be raised by her mother alone.

When she was just 16 years old, she became pregnant, and she ended up marring the 15 year old father, my grandfather.  But the baby was stillborn.  Then, five years later, she became pregnant again, but this time, the baby was strangled by his own umbilical cord while being born.  Then, five years after that, in 1939, she became pregnant again and gave birth to my father.

My grandparents had a very tumultuous marriage.  They were young, of course, that didnt help.  I believe I remember hearing they lived with my great-grandmother.  That could not have been pleasant either, because I've heard that she was a physically large (not fat, just big) woman with a very overbearing, rigid and uncompromising personality.  She was also of the fire-and -brimstone religious persuasion, probably akin to what we'd today call evangelical.  So being two teenagers who had engaged in fornication and being forced to live with her would obviously not have been an easy thing.

But in addition, I have heard there were instances of alcoholism and physical abuse between the married couple.  What I know for sure is, a few months before my father was born they divorced.  My grandmother kept my grandfather away from my father, they would in fact not meet until my dad was in his late teens.

My grandmother and my dad also had to care for my great-grandmother when she was ill and dying from some kind of cancer, and from my dad said, it was not pretty.  Having to do that, in her home, while raising her son and working in a shoe factory in town could NOT have been easy on her.

Grandma lived through the Great Depression.  She showed me ration books from WWII she still had, and told me never to trust a bank, they were all crooks.  When we sold her home we found over $1000 in bills $20 and under stuffed under her mattress.  We had no idea how long they had been there, but some of the bills dated from the 1960s (we sold the house in the last 80s).

From my earlier memory, she had a man living in the house with her, Arthur.  I never really saw them as husband and wife, since they weren't.  As a kid I always saw him as a boarder, since he had his own bedroom.  But he too was an alcoholic, and that wasn't good for her.  I never saw my grandmother drink alcohol, but I know she did in the past, because I remember hearing stories of dad, as a kid, doing his homework in a local bar or pub in the back booth while grandma was sitting at the bar drinking and having a good time.

I have no specific knowledge of Arthur being abusive, but somehow, even as I kid, I always thought grandma was very meek and subservient towards him, exceptionally so.  So there might have been.  Then Arthur got hit with cancer, had a colostomy bag for a while, went into the V.A. hospital in DC, and died. I vividly remember all this happening.

My grandmother was always a worried, she stressed over everything, anything, and nothing at all.  Dad was too, but to a much lesser extent.  But she also apparently suffereed from extreme depression.  I dont know the circumstances behind it, but I know in the 60's grandma was committed to a local insane asylum, as they called them back then.  And as was the practice at the time, was given electroshock therapy.  Several times.  Mom said she was never the same person after that.  I obviously never knew her before that.

After Arthur's death in the mid to late 80's, Grandma lived alone, still in the house her father had built, until her Alzheimer's symptoms got too bad.  We got a call at 3 in the morning one time during a cold streak in February that Grandmas was outside, in just her nightgown and no shoes, in the snow and cold, banging on neighbors' doors demanding to be let back in.  After that incident, we moved her into our home for a few months until we could get her into the local old folks home.

I think it was 1989 when we got her in there.  My parents visited her every Sunday afternoon.  I visited less so, but stopped going altogether one Sunday after seeing her in a wheelchair, with a tray strapped across it, leaning forward onto it, her hair disheveled, her teeth not in, chattering away making non-sensical sounds to herself and drooling onto her nightgown.  I just couldn't see her like that anymore.

She died in February of 1995.  She was 82 years old.

As I said, she did not have an easy life.  But what I remember of my Grandma is going out to her house every Sunday, sitting at her old wooden dining room table (which is currently MY dining room table), sitting on her old rocker (which is currently in my bedroom), next to that huge floor model radio of old, with the clock atop it that chimed every 15 minutes (it's on top of a set of shelves in my dining room, but I keep it unplugged, the chimes are too loud and too often), read a book, or talking to us while I colored or drew on a pad of paper she always had there.  And she and I would both eat Saltine crackers together while drinking some Pepsi.  She was short, stout, dark complected, with a small pointy nose, and for some reason, I think greasy skin.

But her laugh, it was loud, boisterous and contagious.  And when I was young, I remember her laughing a lot, not so much as I got older.

As I said, she didn't have an easy life, but she did raise my dad, who wasn't a great father (because he had no male role model), but was a decent man with a good heart who always provided for his family.  And without her, I, of course, wouldn't be here without her.

So here's to Grandma.  Happy 100th Birthday!
