On this date, in 1885, in Texas, was born Chester Nimitz.

He was a fleet Admiral in the Pacific during World War II. He was, in fact, Commander In Chief of the US Pacific Fleet. He was a respected expert on submarines and helped develop the first nuclear powered subs. He contributed greatly to victory in the Pacific in that war.

Nimitz passed away in 1966 at the age of 81.
