Badass Birthday
On this date, in 1908 in Czechia, Oskar Schindler was born.
Schindler was a German industrialist and member of the Nazi Party. He employed over 1200 Jews in his munitions factories in Poland, Bohemia and Monrovia during the war. In doing so, he kept those Jews from going to the extermination camps and the gas chambers therein. He continued to do so until the end of World War II and ended up spending most of this fortune on bribes to government officials and supplies for the workers.
He passed away in 1974.
Protecting over a thousand Jews from the Nazi while being a member of the Nazi party, risking not only his fortune, but his freedom and his life? Total and complete fucking badass.

Reep Daggle is from Durla, the planet who millennia ago had the "Six Minute War" with unleashed atomic weapons all over the globe. The few survivors were mutated into creatures who were able to change their shape into nearly anything. And they passed that ability down through the generations.
Durlans aren't really trusted in the galaxy so they keep pretty much to their planet not going off world. Reep said screw that! he left Durla and came to Earth with the express wish to join the Legion and show everything Durlas could in fact be trusted. And he did. And he has. He was the full time leader of the Legion Espionage Squad.

Just saw online that Gerry Conway has died.
He was a comic book writer, and influential one. He created Firestorm, The Punisher, the Man-Bat. He wrote the story where Gwen Stacy died. He co-created Power Girl, Jason Todd (the second Robin) and Killer Croc. He wrote the Justice League of America for 8 years, from 1978 to 1986, and while I don't like the Detroit League era that he wrote, at least his stories were readable and entertaining. He wrote the cross company teamup between Superman and Spider-Man in the late 70s. He wrote a lot of Spider-Man issues and Batman issues. And these are only his comic book works, he wrote things outside of comics as well.
I can't say that he was one of my favorite writers, but he was a constant presence in the comic books of my youth and was generally entertaining.
He was 73. R.I.P.

On this date in 1963, in Swansea England, Russell T. Davies was born.
Who, you say?
He's a Welsh screenwriter and tv producer. He created the gay ground-breaking series Queer As Fold in England in 1999-2000. This led to the American version on Showtime 25 years ago.
And then, 5 years later the BBC took a big chance on him and allowed him to reboot the Doctor Who series nearly 20 years after they canceled it. And DAMN if he didn't do an INCREDIBLE job! His version is what got me hooked on Doctor Who. After he left, with the decline of the plots and stories, you knew how important he was to its recreation.
He's done other stuff, including Doctor Who spin offs (Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures) but really, his Doctor Who work alone (with maybe a smidge of QasF thrown in for good measure) show just how much of a badass he is!
