Chapter 11, Page 29...

Sunday, I slept in since I knew I wouldn't be able to on Monday.  I woke up at 8, went to the bathroom, was on my phone for a bit, read some, then went back to sleep, not waking up until 11:00.  I got out of bed, showered, dressed and called and left a message for mom.  She called me back when she got home, and then came in to get me.

We went to the Old City Buffet for lunch, eating way more than we should.  Then we went to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things.  Then she brought me home here.  And I spent the rest of the day on the sofa, on the computer some, but mainly just watching football.  All the way through until 9PM, when it was time for The Walking Dead.

The fall finale episode...damn, what a lot of crazy shit that happened!  Insane.  But a good episode nonetheless.  After this, I watched just a little bit of the football game, and then went up to bed, read just a short bit and then turned out the light and went to sleep.  I had to go a bit early cause I had to get up early on Monday.

Chapter 11, Page 28...

Saturday, I got up and to work without problems.  Again, I was the only one from my department there and I handled everything that came up, which wasn't much.  I did get the new clients taken care of and some other paperwork done.  And then I came home.

I hung out here for a bit, on the computer, watching TV and reading my book, until my company arrived: Johnnie!  YAY!  He had texted me on Thanksgiving he was back in the area, and we planned for him to come over this night.

I got to know Johnnie through his uncle, Conrad, that I played D&D with.  Conrad's wife, Tanda, also played with us.  And about 17 or 18 years ago, when they stopped playing, the had had two girls.

Anyway, Saturday night, Johnnie texted me and asked if he could bring Tanda and the girls along.  I really just wanted to spend some time talking with Johnnie, and not with someone I hadn't had contact with in 20 years and two people I didn't really know at all.  But what could I say?  So I said sure, bring them along.  They ate supper and Johnnie's grandmother's and then headed down.  I got some food from Rutters and waited for them.

When they got here, we all had a pretty damn good time.  They were here for about two hours.  Tanda and I caught up on what we had been doing over the last 20 years.  I found out from Johnnie all about his future plans.

On December 29th, he's moving to China!  He'll be working at the University of Shanghai.  He'll be a professor, but he wont be teaching.  He'll have his own lab, where he'll be working with and on proteins.  He'll have the ability to hire up to 9 people to work with him.  And he'll be doing amazing science-y things there (that last part is what I added, not what he said).

It just amazing to me....I can't believe it.  I first met Johnnie when he was 15.  We got closer when he got his license and a car and could drive down to my apartment to hang out.  He came there when he was upset, when he was angry at his family, when he had great news to tell me, or bad news.  My apartment was a refuge for him.

Then he want off to college in Bradford PA (and that's how we came to stop there on our way to Toronto...it was originally to visit with Johnnie).  And then for a short time, he had his own column here on the Palace called Testicular Tuesdays.  And then he graduated and started his grad work in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania (I got to visit him once there, seeing his office and apartment and having an unbelievably delicious sub there).  And once he got his Masters there, he stayed there to get his PhD.  And after getting his PhD, he moved a few years ago to University Of Chicago where he continued the work he did earlier.  He's had several studies published in peer review journals.  Apparently, he's known in that particular field (not world reknown, not a super star or anything, but people have at least heard of him).

And now...NOW, he's going to a foreign country, China of all places, will have his OWN lab and people working under him!  My GOD!  It's mind boggling. I mean, there's NO WAY I would have ever thought he would every be in a position to do something like this.

I'm very proud of him.   He said he'll be making a few trips each year back home here, and he said he'll get in touch with me when he does.  And he had me download an app onto my phone so we could chat once he gets there, like Facebook messager, so it's not like he'll just disappear overseas.

But still...wow....unbelievable.

Anyway, after they left, I watched a repeat of last week's Doctor Who (since I was watching The Laramie Project when it aired) and then this week's episode.  And then I went to bed, read some and then went to sleep.

Chapter 11, Page 27...

Friday, I got up and to work with little problems.  I was the only one at work that day, the two coworkers in my department both had off.  But it wasn't a bad day. I had a couple new clients to take care of, and did so.  And then the rest of the day...well, I didn't do a whole lot.  I spent time talking to various coworkers throughout the day.  And that...yep, that was it.

After work, I came home and hung out here until mom arrived.  She had gotten us meals to go from the dining hall out where she lives, and brought them in.  We ate supper and then put up the outside Christmas decorations, the Christmas tree, and a few other things inside.  And then we sat in the living, bathing in the lights and feels of Christmas and chatted.  Then, she left.

I was on the computer and I watched a few episodes of Jessica Jones, and then went to bed, read some and then went to sleep.

Then I wash the week out of my hair....

So here's some pics from some things that have happened this week.

Tuesday, I came home from work and found this on a window ledge right outside my back door.

There's a squirrel in my neighborhood who does this all this time.  There have been walnuts on my front bench, a pizza crust next to my front door and another walnut on the kitchen window ledge.  These were not all at once, nor were there there forever, just a little bit of time.  But I think this stuff is funny when I see it.

Wednesday, I got home from work, opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle of Diet Lemon Snapple, let the door shut, and turned away, and then it struck me: there was something else in the fridge.  I opened the door again and saw this:

Yes a birthday card.  And behind it is the big container holding this:

Yep Mama Polt's Homemade Boston Creme Pie!  Both put there by the Birthday Fairy! YUMMY!

Thursday, of course, was Thanksgiving.  Here are some pics from the family luncheon:

This is aDORable 14 month old Morgan and his mommy.  He is so cute, and fun, and funny.  Had a great time there, just like every year.

Later in the evening, while watching football, I did my Christmas cards for the year, just like every year.  Anyway, here is the before picture:

And here is the After picture:

And then tonight, after work, Mom stopped over, we had supper and then we decorated the house.  This is the tree:

Been a fun week!

Chapter 11, Page 26...

And welcome to Thanksgiving!

I got up late, like after ten.  I showered, dressed, got online for a very short bit and then headed out.  Off to Rutters first, for coffee and to gas up the car.  Then out to moms.  We chatted a bit, then I helped her load up her car and off we went to the Thanksgiving Lunch!

As every year, the family rents out a community center and we have a meal buffet style.  This year, there was a very low turnout, only 27 people.  Some years in the past we've had close to 70, but ah well, people have other relatives to visit as well I guess.  Still there was tons of good food, lots of people I only see once a year (most of whom I dont mind seeing), and fun, cause not only was lil Morgan there, but Lil Chris was there as well.  He's like two and half and fun and funny too.

About 3:00ish, everyone had packed up and were leaving and we did too.  We went back to her house, unloaded her car, chatting for about 15 minutes and then I came home.  I once again settled in on the couch and started watching football, with my boxes of Christmas cards, stamps, address book and return envelopes by my side.  And I started working on them.  Roughly 4 hours later, all over 80 of them were completed and ready for mailing next week.  *WHEW*

After this, I watched more football while I updated my checkbook and got some bills paid and ready for mailing tomorrow.  And once that was done, and I great a bit bored with the football game, I went upstairs, about 9-ish, read some and then went to sleep.

Chapter 11, Page 25...

Welcome to my 48th Birthday!  Today, I got to work on time, but that was only because I had stuff to do. Was having a weekly meeting at noon and there was still info and paperwork I needed to gather together for the meeting.  But that all went well and easy. And the meeting itself went quite well as well.

Several people wished me a happy birthday throughout the day, even a few clients did so after they overheard someone else saying it.  And at the meeting, the big boss slid a card across the table to me.  He gets cards for all the employees birthdays, but usually he mails them.  He said this time he forgot to, so he just gave it to me in person.  Is it a big deal?  No not really, but it IS quite a morale boost, just to know he takes the time to do this.  Especially considering the previous idiot we had for a big boss.

Anyway, after work, I stopped by Hallmark to get some cards i needed, and then came home before heading out to moms.  Two of my cousins, one who lives in Hershey PA and one who lives outside Baltimore, were home for the holiday and mom was hosting them at her cottage, making slippery beef pot pie for supper.  I went for the food, the conversation, the fun, and to see lil Morgan, who's now like 14 months old, just learning to walk and terribly fun and funny.  I was out there until about 7:00-ish.

I came home and parked myself.on the couch, where I putzed around online while watching more of Jessica Jones.  And after catching several episodes of that, I turned everything off and went to bed, read some and then to sleep.

On Mars I'd be 25 and a half years old.
On Jupiter I'd be 4 years old.
On Saturn I'd be over 1 and a half years old.
On Uranus I'd be a little over half a year old.
On Neptune I'd be almost three and a half months old.
On Pluto I'd be slightly over two months old.

Chapter 11, Page 24...

Tuesday, I got up and to work a little bit early.  At work, I had some things to take care of, the normal paperwork, which I did.  Also got other things accomplished, a busy day all in all.

I came home and crashed on the couch.  I was on the computer, but at the same time I started watching "Jessica Jones" on Netflix.  Got through three episodes.  It's a great show!  It's dark and gritty, just like Daredevil, and it should be because it's based in the same city, neighborhood, and the universe that the rest of the Marvel characters are a part of.  A really great show, so far at least.

After three of the shows, I turned it off, expecting Marvels Agents of SHIELD to come on...but it didn't for some reason.  And then I went to bed, read and then to sleep.

POLT
Today is my birthday, I turn 48.  Whoopee.

So to get some perspective, let's see what I found online:

Animal Man was the 48th member of the Justice League (he was a Justice League Europe member).

Arizona was the 48th state.

Cadmium is the 48th element on the periodic table.

Crystal Kid was the 48th member of the Legion Of Super-Heroes (he joined during the Five Year Gap).

Edward VIII was the 48th English Monarch, abdicating in December 1936 after an 11 month reign.

The 1976 presidential election was the 48th election (Jimmy Carter, the winner, in blue; Gerald Ford in red).

Immunity Syndrome was the 48th episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Daryl "Moose"Johnston was a Dallas Cowboy in the 90s who wore the number 48 jersey.

"Under The Dome" was the 48th novel of Stephen King.

Living Lightning was the 48th member of The Avengers (he was a West Coast Avenger).

Madeline Kahn was the 48th host of Saturday Night Live (during the third season).

The 48th Super Bowl was in January 2014 and pitted the Seattle Seahawks, the winner, versus the Denver Broncos.

Graham Chapman of Monty Python's Flying Circus died when he was 48 years old in 1989.

Marty Feldman, of many movies including Young Frankenstein, died when he was 48 years old in 1982.

However, by managing to turn 48, I've lived longer than quite a few other famous people:

Alexander The Great
Jane Austen
John Belushi
Jesus Christ
Kurt Cobain
James Dean
Princess Diana
Amelia Earhart
Anne Frank
Judy Garland
Andy Gibb
Che Guevara
Jimi Hendrix
Buddy Holly
Janis Joplin
John Kennedy
Martin Luthor King JR
Heath Ledger
Bruce Lee
John Lennon
Bob Marley
Freddie Mercury
Glenn Miller
Marilyn Monroe
Jim Morrison
Wolfgang Mozart
George Orwell
Eva Peron
River Phoenix
Elvis Presley
Otis Redding
Tupac Shakur
King Tut
Vincent Van Gogh
Sid Vicious
Paul Walker
Oscar Wilde
Hank Williams
Amy Winehouse

So I guess, all in all, it's not too bad to be turning 48.
