This morning, I got up, threw on some clothes and a cap, put some gum in my mouth, and headed off to Rutters for my morning coffee and donut (cap covers the bedhead, gum the morning breath, since I didn't shower or brush my teeth before leaving.  Don't judge me...).

I got there, got the coffee, picked out my chocolate covered, pudding filled donut (again, don't judge...) and made my way to the counter to pay for it all.  There were a few people in front of me.

The guy directly in front of me had sunglasses on, so I couldn't see his eyes, but he was turned around, looking at me.  And he said, "I know you." And I'm thinking first, oh God, it's some client from work (that's what I ALWAYS think when I don't recognize someone who recognizes me).  But then he added, "From school."

I blinked a couple times cause this guy didn't look familiar to me at all.  So I said, "I don't think I recognize you." And so he took his sunglasses off and said, "John Smith (obviously not his real name, that's just the name I'm using here)".

I recognized the name, but still, the face didn't look familiar at all.  But he put his hand out, so I shook it.  And I said it's been a long time.  he went on to tell me he left school early, joined the military, was in it for 15 years, blew out his knee twice and was discharged medically.  I didn't know what to say, so I mumbled something like, "Well that's too bad."

Luckily, it was then his turn at the register.  When he was done paying he turned, addressed me by my first name and said, "nice seeing you."  I said it back and he left.

Walking back to my house, I was thinking about this. It's kinda strange to me.  He knew my name and recognized my face even though it's been at least 30 years since we've seen each other.  When I didn't recognize his face at all, nor remembered his name, nor would I have known I even knew him at all if he hadn't spoken up first.

It got me wondering: do I still look like I did 30 years ago, despite age, weight, retreating hairline and a goatee?  And am I memorable enough that he could recognize me now?  Or am I just old and forgetful?  I mean he and I really weren't close at all in school.  But yet he knew me and I didn't know him.

Does that mean I'm more memorable and he's not?  Or does it mean he has a good memory and I dont?

So, we're still downloading all my files from Carbonite.  It's been roughly 20 hours, and we're 18% done.  I was surprised at how much time it was taking, and then I saw.....it's loading all my music on the new computer.  ALL. OF. IT.  And I had all my CD's uploaded on there.  That's like, oh I don't know, a couple hundred CDs.  *SIGH*

Well hopefully it'll be down by this coming weekend....who knows?

The old computer is still chugging along.  It's actually what I'm using now. I could use the new one, but I don't want to tie up memory by making blog posts, I just want it doing nothing but downloading the files.

Assuming the old computer trundles on, I'll keep using that until the new one is done.

Just wanted to give you all an update on what's been happening.

I would not sell my collection, if I did, I would weep (Part 6)...

Today In The History of
Polt's Comic Book Collection

Thirty five years ago, in June 1981, Super Friends #45 was published.

The Super Friends tv show on Saturday morning, got me into the Super Friends comic book in the late 70s, which in turn got me into the Justice League and it was the JLA that I first decided to collect each issue put out.  So, in a sense, the Super Friends started it all for me.  And therefore, they hold a special place in my collection and my heart.

Anyway, I dont remember this issue specifically, but I know it's one I enjoyed, mainly because it starred some members of the The Global Guardians.  They first appeared in Super Friends, and were later merged into the regular DC Comics Universe itself.   And I always enjoyed the concept of a team of international superheroes, which is just what they were.

Anyway, the comic book geek in me can also tell you that the cover artist is Kurt Schaffenberger.  I liked his work, although I always though it was a bit...cartoony.  Still, perfect for The Super Friends though.

So, A Local Celebrity, Mr. David ParisPeking came over this evening to help me set up the new computer (God bless his soul).  And just as I feared, there were problems from beginning to end.

He arrived about 4:45pm and left about 8:00, and things still weren't working right.  Now he did make a phone call, which was okay, no problem.  And we did walk to the Waynesburger so I could buy him supper, that whole thing probably took no more than a half hour or so, as well.

But in between there, there were problems with passwords, activation codes, black screens, a freeze, and now I've been waiting more than an hour for McAfee to uninstall itself.  *SIGH*

I just knew there was no way it go well, I could just feel it.  I've got the old computer up and running, but it's still on it's last legs.  I wanted to have the new one up and running tonight, but alas, it was not to be.  So I'll let the new computer on over night and we'll see if McAfee ends up uninstalling itself or not.  I dont hold out much hope for that....

Also, if the old computer goes totally tits up and I don't have the new one up and running yet, there may be a few days with no new Palace posts.  So if that occurs, you'll know what's going on.

Hopefully, this will all get straightened out soon....but again, I woulnd't bet on it.

POLT
Today, I didn't go to work.  Initially, when the alarm went off I wasn't feeling it, just wasn't feeling work at all.  So I called in and took the day and went back to sleep.  But then later when I woke up, I had a pretty bed headache, right behind my left eye.

When I finally got out of bed, about 10:45, the headache was in full force. I took some Advil and that helped a lot.

But I still havent had a good day.  Since getting back from Toronto in mid-April, I have not been able to get my blood sugar to where I want it.  Prior to that, in the morning, my blood sugar was usually 80s or 90s.  Since then, it's only been under 100 a few times.  And I dont understand why.  I'm not eating like I should, true, but I'm not eating any worse than I was before Toronto.

Here's what I don't understand: yesterday I got home from work. I took a 45 minute walk.  Later, a bit after 6, I had supper consisting of steak, with A1 sauce, green beans and deviled eggs, and drank Diet Coke.  And for dessert I had one sugar cookie.   I was done eating before 6:30.

I took my blood sugar before bed after 9, and it was 208, not great but not as bad as it has been before.  I had nothing else to eat, took my pills, gave myself the insulin shot, went to bed, read and to sleep.

Then, close to 14 hours later, after eating nothing, I get up and test the blood sugar, and it's....133? What the hell?  I excercised, ate low carb/low sugar (primarily) and even after 14 hours, it had only dropped 70 points?  Previously, it had dropped from like 288 and in only 10 hours, was down to 95!  I don't understand.  It's very frustrating.

My major concern, other than the frustration, is what a previous doctor told me: eventually, if I don't get this under control, my pancreas will just give up and stop making insulin at all!

I'll see the doctor in like three weeks.  I hope I have it back under control by then though.

Wednesday, June 01, 2016

I know everyone says their mother is a saint, but mine, truly is.

She called recently and during the conversation she told me this.  There is a guy out there in the village who is 99 years old.  She knows him well enough to say hi, but he's not a friend or anything.

A lady mom went to school with worked out there and retired from there.  And now, she volunteers to do stuff, like if someone out there has surgery and is sent home but isn't supposed to be alone, she'll spent the night with them, that kinda stuff.

So she tells me mom that she, the lady mom went to school with, has to have surgery and wont be available for three weeks in June until she's recovered.  So she asked around to see if anyone had any ideas, and someone else told her, "Call Bev!"

So she called mom, and asked her if, for three weeks, mom would go on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to help put eye drops in the eyes of this 99 year old and help him with breakfast (not cook it, but basically make sure he can get milk in his cereal, or see that he gets enough food, etc).

When she's telling me this, I'm thinking, "eh, I dont know, what if something goes wrong?  I don't think I'd want to be doing something medical to someone I don't know terribly well."

But she finishes up by saying, "So when she told me all that, I said, Sure!  No problem!  I live close enough to his place I can just walk there."

Wow....

She's gonna help some guy she barely knows with eye drops and food.  She's a saint.  A saint, I tell ya.
