Extrano
Gregorio de la Vega was a Peruvian who displayed very minor magical powers. In the late 1980s, he was chosen by the Guardians Of The Universe, along with other human beings, to be subjected to an experiment in human evolution. The results of this made him much more powerful and heightened or outright gave super powers to the other members experimented on. These people decided to band together as The New Guardians.
The team had a shortlived comic and then just kinda faded into oblivion, although Extrano did appear occasionally in Green Lantern comics. In recent years, Extrano's reappeared in the DC Universe, becoming more prevalent.
He also was the first openly gay superhero in DC Comics (created in 1988).
