I would not sell my collection, for if I did, I would cry (Part 131)....

Today In The History of Polt's Comic Book Collection

Today, we travel back 51 years to October of 1975 and the first issue of Marvel's short-lived series The Champions!

I did not buy this one off the rack (I was only 7 years old) I either didn't see this issue or the cover didn't appeal to me.  At the time I was mainly getting Lil Archie or Scooby Doo comics books and sometimes, I get some DC comics that had member of the Super Friends TV shows on the cover.

I did acquire all 17 issues of the series over the years, mainly just to have them all.  The Champions were always a weird team.  First, it's the membership: 2 former X-Men (Angel and Iceman), 2 former second tier Avengers (Black Widow and Hercules) and for whatever reason, Ghost Rider as well!   It didn't make a lot of sense as most of these characters hadn't even been seen together before.

Also, the team was based in Los Angeles, the first team in Marvel Comics to NOT be in the New York City area.  And also, the creative teams were not stable.  Writers and artists came and went, sometimes only doing one issue and moving on.  It's difficult to get any kind of continuity or characterization when you have different people working on it month by month.  And that was evident when you read the issues in the series.

The group HAD potential, and they were in the process of increasing their membership (the Russian heroine Darkstar and the size changing Black Goliath had guest starred in latter issues), but the series was canceled before they officially joined.

But I got them because I liked the mutant members and all the series wasn't popular so the individual issues weren't expensive to get.
