Humberto Lopez's parents were paleontologists who had, in one of their digs, discovered a crystallized dinosaur bone. They gave it their son and he wore it as a medallion. Over time, he learned that it gave him the ability to take on some characteristics of dinosaurs just by thinking about it. As a teenager with a new untested power, he became a member of the Avengers' Academy where, along with other teens, he received training in the use of his powers as well as defensive and combat techniques.
