Black Super Hero History Month
Patriot
Marvel Comic's Patriot first appeared in Young Avengers #1 in April 2005. Eli Bradley was the grandson of Isaish Bradley, a black man given the Super Soldier formula that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. The government was testing version of the formula to see if they could make another Captain America and they used African-Americans for the test.
Iron Lad recuited Eli to join the Young Avenger when they first formed. He remained with the team until it was revealed, contrary to what he had said, he did not in fact have any super powers. He had taken MGH, an illegal drug that gave the user short periods of meta-human abilities. He resigned.
Later, he jumped in front of a blast meant for Captain America and was gravely injured. He required a blood transfusion from his grandfather to survive, and this granted him the super powers of the Super Soldier formula. He remained active both solo and with the Young Avengers for a period of time, before retiring.
After recieving the blood tranfusion Eli's strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, agility, toughness, senses and healing factor are all super human. In addition, early on, he was given Captain American's original triangular shield.
