Chapter 2, page 1....
I slept in and then putzed around here, reading the newspaper and my book and watching more Star Trek: Enterprise episodes. I showered and got some McDonald's for lunch, along with taking the paper to mom.
While on the sofa, reading my book I shifted and something...cracked inside the sofa. It had been making creaking sounds for a few months, but this one was louder...and the sofa was sagging dangerously. I hoped to deal with it at a later date, but I was fearful I'd be sitting on it one day and something would break and then I'd be sucked down into the sofa and not be able to easily get out of it.
What to do, what to do? Naturally, I did what anyone would do...I called mom. I asked her to come down if she hadn't put her car away yet, and see if she could help me flip it so I could look under it. She did. And we did flip it. We pulled the fabric off and looked. There were just thin beams of wood that comprised the whole couch. I thought they were 2X4s, but no, there were just thin beams of wood. And there were only STAPLED! That was the problem. After 3.5 years of supporting my fat ass, the staples (STAPLES! Not nails but staples!) had failed and a joint was coming apart.
So after looking at it, mom and I got out the nails and my hammer and stuff, but after looking everything over, mom decided we needed different nails. And perhaps the drill. So off she went back to her house to gather the stuff together. When she returned we nailed some stuff together, but we needed to use a vise like thingee to hold two pieces of wood together while hammering. And so...off she went again, back to her house to get the vise like thingee. Upon her return, he used the vise like thingee and got everything nailed as well as it could be nailed. And then I duct-taped the whole she-bang together as best as I could. Then we flipped the sofa back and tested it and...nope, no creaking. It was fixed. And for quite a bit less than the price of a new couch. And ever since then, when I sit on it, no matter where I sit on it, there's no creaking or cracking. So we've made it better than what it has been for years.
After this, I made my to my friend Duff's house. Duff is my oldest friend, and by that, I mean been my friend the longest. He and I first hung out back in 1987. I was Best Man in his first wedding in 1991. And every year since 1995, except for one, we've been together watching the Super Bowl.
There were 8 of us there, not including the dog. We watched the game (and despite the Seahawks loss, what an awesome game it was!), and ate. Oh man, did we eat: two kinds of pizza, three different kinds of BBQ, two pies, lil weiners wrapped in bacon, all kinds of sodas, chips, doritos, dips, salsa, celery, and other stuff I've since forgotten. Such a great meal, and such a great fun time.
It started snowing and sleeting and such while the game was ongoing. I had no trouble getting home though. And once I got home, I watched a few lil bit more Enterprise before going to bed.
