Used to be a superhero, I would swoop down...

Superhero Sunday

Today, we'll be talking about Black Canary

1st Appearance: November 1969
Real Name: Dinah Laruel Lance
Powers: Her sonic scream "canary cry", expert martial artist
Origin: Her mother was also named Black Canary and was active during WWII. As she grew up, young Dinah reveled in the stories her mother, and the other superheros from that time, told. When she was old enough, she took up crime fighting herself. ANd it was then she realized she had the sonic scream, a power her mother didn't posess. Black Canary was a long time member of the Justice League Of America, and, after one of th continuity reboots, was actually a founding member of the League.

My Thoughts: i always liked Black Canary. First, she was only the second woman in the JLA after WOnder Woman. Second, even with her sonic scream, she still was basically only a hand to hand fighter on the same team as SUperman, Wonder WOman, Green Lantern, etc, etc, etc. And yet she held her own. She had the legacy ties back to the heroes of WWII, and I always had a fondness for them. I always thought she was underused though. Recently, in the last couple years, she's been a part of Birds Of Prey, teaming wit Huntress (already mentioned a few weeks ago here) and being the legs of Oracle (a crippled Barbara Gordon, ie Batgirl). They're a pretty cool team as well. And she's no longer being underused, with the Identity Crisis last year, she, and the other "second tier" JLA members were brought to the fore front. SHe'll be a part of comics for some time to come.
