The superhero market was flooded with poorly written, violent anti-heroes who looked like, or actually used to be, conceived of as villians: Cable, Wolverine, Venom, The Punisher, Ghost Rider, Spawn. This was the so-called dark age of superheroes, often cited as the successor to the silver age. The silver age completely ran out of imaginative energy. - Geoff Klock
