The Question first appeared in Batman #475 in March 1992. Renee Montoya was a detective in the Gotham City Police Department assigned to the Major Crimes Unit. She is outed as a lesbian and later resigns from the police department in disgust over the corruption on the force. She was trained by Vic Sage, the first person to hold the name of The Question. Upon Sage's death, she took over his identity. She has extensive marital arts skills, detective skills, and marksman.
