Karma first appeared in Marvel Team-Up #100 in October 1980. Xi'an Coy Manh was born in Vietnam and first discovered her powers to psionically possess the minds of other people there. She and he family fled the country becoming one of the many "Vietnamese Boat People". She and her family were in NYC when she was found by Charles Xavier and became a founder of the New Mutants team. She later admitted she loved Kitty Pryde, but as Kitty was straight, there never was a romantic aspect to their relationship.
